My Onward Journey as a Physician and Travel Blogger!

50th blog! I can hardly believe I’ve done so much writing. I want to thank everyone who has read my blog and continues to do so. It is heartening for me to see the support from so many of you. Writing to me happened accidentally, as you might have read in my first blog, which came from the sudden heart event, and expressing the event was cathartic. Hence, I embarked on a deep dive into the areas that interest me, especially in preventive medicine and longevity medicine. Medicine is changing at a rapid pace; it is said that there are life-changing treatments emerging every few months. With the advent of AI, we are moving at lightning speed. Unless we keep up with it, we are definitely missing out (DMO).

I am fascinated by the modern science of prevention. Prevention is better than a Cure. I have been blogging about various health topics, with a focus on longevity and prevention, as my interests. I also share my passion for travel and will continue to blog. Travel brings me meaning; new cultures, new places, and new faces always spark my curiosity, especially the historical sites, which reveal the awe and imagination of their builders.

As I continue to write and research more subjects on prevention, I would like to take the time to discuss many people who have been my inspiration over the last few years, especially since the pandemic. Each one has their books and Podcasts if anyone wants to check them out.

Peter Attia…

Dr. Peter Attia is a renowned physician specializing in the fields of longevity and preventive medicine. After earning a mechanical engineering degree from Queen's University, he obtained his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and trained in general surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He further specialized in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute, focusing on immune-based therapies for melanoma. Dr. Attia founded Early Medical, a practice dedicated to extending both lifespan and healthspan through personalized health strategies. He is also the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity, and hosts The Drive, a podcast exploring health, medicine, and longevity topics. His approach emphasizes proactive health measures, including optimized nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and emotional well-being, to enhance quality of life as we age. His podcast is one of the best on discussing nuances in modern medicine.

Jason Fung…

Dr. Jason Fung is a nephrologist and New York Times bestselling author, widely recognized for pioneering the use of intermittent fasting and low-carbohydrate diets in managing obesity and type 2 diabetes. After earning his medical degree from the University of Toronto, he completed his residency and fellowship in nephrology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Observing the link between insulin therapy and weight gain in his kidney patients, Dr. Fung developed a dietary approach emphasizing fasting and reduced carbohydrate intake. He co-founded The Fasting Method, a program designed to help individuals achieve weight loss and naturally reverse type 2 diabetes. His influential books, including The Obesity Code, The Diabetes Code, and The Cancer Code, have challenged conventional medical practices and introduced dietary strategies to manage chronic diseases. One of the interesting perspectives on the disease comes from examining it through the spectrum of fasting. His books shed light on reversing diabetes with fasting.

Anthony Bourdain…

Anthony Bourdain (1956–2018) was an American chef, author, and travel documentarian who gained fame with his 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. The book provided an unfiltered glimpse into the gritty realities of professional kitchens, propelling Bourdain into the spotlight and paving the way for a successful television career. He hosted acclaimed shows like No Reservations and Parts Unknown, where he explored global cultures through food, emphasizing human connections and storytelling. Bourdain's candid approach and deep curiosity made him a beloved figure who bridged culinary arts with cultural exploration. He passed away in 2018; however, his legacy lives on.

Dr. Valter Longo…

Dr. Valter Longo is an Italian-American biogerontologist and cell biologist renowned for his research on aging, fasting, and disease prevention. He serves as the Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and Biological Sciences and directs the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California (USC). Dr. Longo is best known for developing the Fasting-Mimicking Diet (FMD), a dietary regimen designed to replicate the benefits of fasting while still providing essential nutrients. His 2018 book, The Longevity Diet, outlines this approach, advocating for a primarily plant-based diet supplemented with periodic fasting to promote longevity and reduce the risk of age-related diseases. Dr. Longo's work has significantly influenced the fields of nutrition and aging, emphasizing the role of diet in extending healthspan and lifespan.

Amit Varma…

Amit Varma is a prominent Indian writer, journalist, and podcaster known for his incisive commentary on politics, economics, and society. Based in Mumbai, he is the creator and host of the acclaimed podcast The Seen and the Unseen, where he engages in deep conversations on public policy, behavioral science, and culture. I continue to learn about history and economics through his guests.

Joe Rogan…

Joe Rogan, with his unique approach, has always inspired me. The Joe Rogan Experience is a long-form interview podcast that has become one of the most popular in the world, featuring a wide range of guests and discussions on various topics. His diverse career and unfiltered approach have made him a significant and sometimes controversial figure in contemporary media.

Playing chess, writing blogs, composing Urdu shayari (poems), traveling, listening to podcasts, bird watching (a new skill in progress), being a foodie, and entrepreneurship are some of my non-medical interests that I enjoy.

Over the years, I have developed a deep respect for those individuals and many more who have shaped and continue to shape my day-to-day life, inspiring me at every turn. I want to thank them for expanding my intellectual thinking and broadening my understanding of the wide range of subjects with which I am not familiar, enabling me to serve my patients better. I feel fortunate to be in this position and cherish every moment, as I have had the opportunity to understand different walks of life and learn about various cultures. There is no greater joy than learning and being curious about the world around us. I will continue to blog on my travels, as I am curious about the world and how it functions. I continue to receive immeasurable support from my family as I pursue my dreams and explore some of my passions in preventive medicine and obesity, and work towards longevity, prevention of heart disease, and reversal of diabetes.
